Why “writ”?

Short answer: an old word for a document you carry, borrowed for a pass you carry.

What is in the name

Historically, a writ was a piece of paper that traveled with a person and said, in effect, this one may pass. It was a carried document that got you through a gate. That picture is the whole reason for the name: a pass in your pocket that gets you to the front of the conversation at a door.

The word also sounds like something stern, and we know it. So, plainly: thewrit has no legal authority, grants no rights, and does not decide anything. A venue looks at the pass, looks at you, and makes its own call. We are a pass, not a power.

What we are building

A small, careful tool for bars and clubs: verify once, be recognized at the next door, and leave every decision to the people who run the door. We are early. We would rather say “not yet” than oversell.

Where this goes, how it is priced, and which claims we can make all depend on pilots and on legal review that has not finished. The security page and the FAQ are kept current with what is true.
